Those who enjoy New York sights the most are the ones who come prepared. This list of things to bring out applies to people who want to spend the entire day on the town without returning home or to your hotel.
1. Knapsack or shoulder bag. Because you need something to carry all the things you'll bring with you.
2. Bottle of water. Bring an empty bottle and fill up at the hotel. New York tap water is generally very good and its free. You'll be walking a lot and hydration is key to staying strong.
3. Comfortable walking shoes. New shoes can kill the feet while pounding the concrete of the city. Even athletic shoes should be broken in prior to walking the town.
4. One, five and ten dollar bills. A small amount of cash in small bills will prevent you from getting into awkward situations with street vendors who won't take a twenty for a two dollar hot dog.
5. Some light snacks. Bring some fruit, pretzels or other light snacks to munch on during the day. You'll be very active and the energy will help. You'll save time because you won't need to search for a store every time you get hungry.
6. Digital camera with fully charged (or extra) batteries. Don't miss a moment of your trip! You never know who or what you'll see in New York and the best memories are the ones you capture yourself.
7. Appropriate outerwear for the weather. Check the weather forecast before you go out for the day. Bring a parka or small umbrella if there's rain in the forecast. A hat and sunblock if it will be warm and sunny. Between December and February you will likely need a hat and gloves.
8. Maps and itinerary. If you have a plan, write it down and bring it with you. This way you won't miss anything. Street and/or a subway map can't hurt either. They're both very light and can be a life saver.
9. Lodging contact information. Always have the name, address and phone number of the place you are staying. You may need it if you decide to take a cab back or otherwise need assistance.
10. Mini toothbrush, toothpaste and hand sanitizer. Breakfast and lunch plus coffee or other soft drinks can make you feel less than fresh. A nice brushing is good for hygiene and your attitude. Hand sanitizer is great for having clean hands when you're buying food on the street when a hand wash isn't an option.
