What is the difference between Broadway and Off Broadway shows?

Answer

There are three main classifications of theater shows in New York City. They are Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway.

The classification is really based on the size of the theater. The largest theaters are typically in the theater district near Times Square. Those with 500 or more seats are considered 'Broadway' theaters. Those with up 99 to 499 seats are considered 'Off Broadway' and smaller theaters are considered 'Off Off Broadway'.

Although almost all of the Broadway shows are in the theater district, there are smaller theaters all over Manhattan that are considered Off and Off Off Broadway. When planning your trip consider that many great shows at smaller venues before moving to the big time theaters.
