Its true that New York City is an expensive place. Here are some tips for making your visit one that does not wreck your wallet.
1. Shop around for flights. Use the code 'nyc' when searching for flight possibilities. This will give you results from all three major airports. You just might find a bargain by arriving at another airport.
2. Go basic on the accommodations. The only thing you'll do in your room is sleep and shower. So staying at a big name chain in the center of Times Square is probably a waste of money. Consider a hostel if you're open to sharing a bathroom.
3. Minimize food and drink costs. Of course you'll still eat and drink. But make most of your meals informal affairs in cafes or diners rather than fancy restaurants. Chinatown has some great values on meals. Bar costs and entry charges will hurt your wallet. Limit your alcohol consumption and only go to places with no entry fee. There are plenty to choose from.
4. Buy daily or weekly subway cards. Use public transportation in lieu of taxi cabs. And get an unlimited fare card so you don't have to pay full price for all of your trips.
5. Go easy on the souvenirs. The best souvenirs are the free ones you can create with your digital camera. Consider to treating yourself, family and friends to a nice slideshow or print some of your best photos as gifts after you've arrived back home.
